To mark the 13th National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day, on May 12, 2021, DRRKS of IKCEST held a knowledge competition on disaster risk reduction. A total of 80 contestants from 20 agencies located in 23 cities from 15 provinces entered the contest.
China is one of the countries in the world with the most severe natural disasters. The disasters are various in types, cover large geographic areas, have high frequencies and result in huge losses. On May 12, 2008, an earthquake with huge destructive power took place in Wenchuan, Sichuan province, resulting in high casualties and big financial losses. To continue increasing the awareness of disaster prevention and reduction by the general public and to improve the work capabilities for disaster prevention, reduction and relief, starting from 2009, approved by the State Council, May 12 every year is named the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day. May 12, 2021 marks the 13th. year for National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day, and the theme for this year is to prevent disaster, to reduce risk and to build a strong foundation for safe economic development.
Emergency response starts from heart, disaster prevention starts with actions. Only when everyone has increased the awareness of disaster prevention and reduction, and has improved skills on risk aversion and self-helping, can one protect one’s own life and one family’s lives and contribute to build a people’s line of defense for disaster prevention and reduction.
