CPEC Disaster Risk Reduction

January 7, 2025 Shigatse earthquake, China

The China Earthquake Networks Center reported, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake occurred in Dingri County, Shigatse City, Xizang Autonomous Region, at 9:05 AM on January 7, 2025. The earthquake had a focal depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located at 28.50°N and 87.45°E.

On January 9th, a joint research team from Central South University and Land Satellite Remote Sensing Application Center, Ministry of Natural Resources of China, relying on the strategic technological innovation cooperation project “Developing Satellite Emergency-Response System and Using for Typical Major Natural Hazards” funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2024, utilized the imagery from the domestically produced Gaofen-2 satellite to conduct an analysis of damaged buildings in the disaster area around the epicenter in Dingri County. They successfully mapped the distribution of damaged buildings in the earthquake-stricken area.

The distribution map (Fig.1) of earthquake-damaged buildings in Dingri County, reveals that the buildings in the epicentral area and surrounding towns and villages have generally suffered varying degrees of damage, indicating the extensive reach of the seismic wave and the unevenness of its destructive power. Specifically, the area of Tangren village south of the epicenter, and the region of Cuoguo Township in the southeast, the destruction of buildings is particularly severe. The damage in these areas is significantly higher than in areas north of the epicenter, indicating a more concentrated release of seismic energy in specific directions. In addition, in an area about 7.7 kilometers northwest of the epicenter, there was also damage to buildings in Mudui village. The damage to buildings in Mudui Village indicates that the destructive force of the earthquake is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the epicenter but can spread over a certain range, causing varying degrees of damage to surrounding areas.
