The International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology (IKCEST) delegation visited UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, invited by the Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences at UNESCO, for cooperation and exchanges in the fields of disaster risk reduction and open science, on November 13-14, 2024.
Mr. Soichiro Yasukawa, Chief of the Disaster Risk Reduction Unit, Natural Sciences Sector, UNESCO, extended his welcome to the IKCEST delegation. After that, he introduced UNESCO's objectives and latest progress and discussed the current hot issues of UNESCO's greatest concern with IKCEST Disaster Risk Reduction sub-platform (IKCEST-DRR) team, including extreme heat, seismic code, AI innovation, nature-based solutions, and cooperation on disaster risk reduction in smart cities.
Subsequently, Prof. Wang Juanle, Executive Director of IKCEST-DRR, presented a report on the main progress of the IKCEST-DRR Sub-platform in 2024. The report covered various aspects, including data resource construction, knowledge application, social media mining, knowledge graphs, emergency and disaster reduction data sharing services, the development of emergency service column for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, news bulletin pushing, disaster prevention and reduction science popularization activities, hosting international training workshops and seminars, participation in international conferences, and awards.
Mr. Soichiro Yasukawa offered several suggestions regarding the construction of the IKCEST-DRR Sub-platform, covering specific aspects such as the openness of the platform portal, social media data analysis, and earthquake emergency response in the Cuba region. Both parties further strengthened their trust and cooperation, planning to continue in-depth collaboration on disaster risk reduction in the future, and jointly promoting and leveraging IKCEST's support role for UNESCO.
