Map description

Map source

The online map of population density in China is derived from the atlas of China National Geographic Map, prepared by the Editorial Committee of China National Geographic Map, and published by China Encyclopedia Press in November 2011, the scale in the map is 1: 40000000. In the figure, you can see the population density (population per square kilometer) with the red line as the geographical limit of the population. The darker the color, the more the population. The national average population density is about 138 people per square kilometer, which is approximately 1.5 times the average population density in Asia and 3.1 times the world average population density. The population density varies widely across the country. The densest city of Shanghai has a population density of 2175 people per square kilometer. The most sparse Tibet Autonomous Region has a population density of slightly more than 2 people per square kilometer. The population density gradually decreased from east to west.

Taking the "Heihe-Tengchong line" as the boundary, the national population is mainly concentrated in southern Liaoning, the Huanghuaihai Plain, the Shandong Peninsula, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the Yangtze River Delta, the Sichuan Basin, the Pearl River Delta and the Chaoshan Plain on the southeast coast; and the northwest region, especially the arid region in the northwest, remote mountainous areas and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is sparsely populated.
