Morocco's national geological monitoring agency announced later that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0 and a depth of 8 kilometers. CCTV news said the epicenter of the powerful quake was located in the Greater Atlas Mountains region. The Great Atlas Mountains is the main vein of the western section of the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, located in the center of Morocco.USGS analysis said that the earthquake epicenter was shallow, the main reason for the earthquake was "the Atlas Mountains 'oblique reverse fault'".
