There are more than 1800 km long sea dams and embankments along the coast, and the coastline is 1075 km long. Since the 13th century, more than 7100 square kilometers of land have been reclaimed, which is equivalent to one fifth of the land area of the Netherlands. Today, 18% of the land in the Netherlands is made by artificial reclamation.
Low and flat is the most prominent feature of Dutch terrain, the whole area is lowland. One quarter of the land is less than 1 meter above sea level, and one fourth of the land is lower than the sea level. Except for some hills in the South and East, most of the terrain is very low. The south is connected by the delta of Rhine River, Maas River and Scheldt river. "Holland" is called Netherland in Germanic, which means "lowland country", it is named because more than half of its territory is below or almost at sea level, some areas are even formed by sea reclamation, such as most parts of Frevoran province.
