2026-08-26: Triggering Position and Impacted Region of the Aug. 26 2026 Flash/Debris Disaster near Nepal-China Border

On the Morning of Aug 26, 2026, a major sudden-onset flash/debris disaster occurred near Gyirong(Keyrung) Port along the China-Nepal border. Following the event, DRS4BR team at Central South University, China, rapidly activated the DRS4BR system for major natural disaster remote sensing and assessment, in response to the Urgent Request for Satellite Data and Rapid Assessment Support from both NCDM and NDRRMA. Acquisition of X-band SAR data (3 m resolution) from Tianyi TY-50satellite was immediately coordinated. Using the stripmap TY-50 imagery obtained on the early morning August 27, and compared with the scattering features of Sential-1 SAR image obtained on August 24, DRS4BR team analyzed and delineated the disaster triggering positions and the impacted region.

1) The flash-debris disaster was highly likely initiated by an snow-ice-rock avalanche or slope failure, which subsequently developed into a cascading process of ice/snow/rock mass collapse/sliding, damming, sudden breaking of dam and rapid flash/debris.

2) The potential source area was preliminary located in a high-elevation snow-ice covered region on the Nepalese side, 13km east from the Gyirong Port; two other dotted areas with uncertainty (to beverified) were found as potential sources locating 1km, 5km east from the Gyirong Port, respectively.

3) The cascading hazard process had caused severe impacts along the valleys in the vicinity of Gyirong Port,including its downstream and upstream.

4) The analysis results were also interpreted assisted with the image of Planet Lab and the 2m image reconstructed by DRS4BR.
